LASERS & LIGHTS
Skin Lasers & Lights
Lasers have been used in dermatology for more than two decades. In recent years there have been significant advances in the development and use of dermatological lasers. Today’s lasers are designed for a broad range of applications and have significant advantages over their old predecessors.
We host an extensive range of Laser & Light platforms under one roof at the “English Surgeon”, home of Patel Plastic Surgery. Some of the services we offer include:
Frequently Asked Questions – (FAQs)
The word IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is not a Laser! In simple words, an IPL device generates intense beams of light of various colours (wavelengths). Each wavelength or colour of Light targets various components (chromophores) in the skin. This could be either dark pigment (sun spots, hair follicles), red pigment (blood cells in capillaries) or colourless (water, collagen).
IPL devices therefore are able to treat various skin conditions including skin rejuvenation, hair removal, pigmentation, redness and capillaries. They are Jack Of All Trades but usually not as powerful as Lasers.
The word LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. These are specialised devices which generate a single wavelength (colour) of very high intensity light beam. This light beam is much stronger and more focused than the light beams generated by IPL devices. Different lasers devices emit different colour of light of a single wavelength and therefore each laser device is very specific to the type of skin condition it can treat. Most common treatment options available using Lasers in medicine are:
- Not all Laser and IPL Platforms are the same.
- Cheap devices, manufactured in Asia have flooded the market in recent years and are being used across most States and Territories of Australia without any serious government regulation restricting their use.
- As a result there has been a significant rise in “laser salons” staffed with unqualified, non medical operators performing dermatological treatments with these devices. Suboptimal treatment outcomes, serious burns and irreversible scarring are some of the consequences of such practices.
- Dermatological Lasers are classified into various categories based upon their power output. Class 4 (C4) Laser devices are considered the most powerful and can only be operated by Licensed Medical doctors in most States and Territories of Australia.
- High end Laser and IPL devices usually cost in excess of $100,000. Manufactured in Europe and the US, such devices are only found in reputable Cosmetic Medical Practices owned and operated by medical doctors. In Australia, these devices can only be sold to Registered Medical Clinics.
Lasers do different things and depend upon many factors. The best treatment outcomes occur when proper lasers are chosen and different lasers may need to be used, simultaneously or concurrently. Such treatment choices are best made by the very person who is going to treat you. A defined sequence of treatments and appropriate lasers will give you the best results. We have large albums of before-and-after books where you will be shown the different types of skin and dermal changes that can be successfully treated with this choice of lasers.
Anyone who has experienced a dermatological laser or IPL treatment at a non medical practice with suboptimal clinical outcome; we encourage them to contact us for an obligation free consultation. Dr BCK Patel MD, FRCS (the "English Surgeon" website, home of Patel Plastic Surgery)
